The V&A Museum of Childhood sits on the border of Hackney and Tower Hamlets, two of the most culturally diverse boroughs in London. Since 2002 and the launch of the Community Programme, the Museum has endeavoured to reflect the diversity of the area with an extensive programme of outreach projects, festivals, performances, events, exhibitions and partnerships, which are all designed to attract new audiences.

Much of the engagement with non-traditional audiences has happened through participatory arts projects which build the foundations for an ongoing relationship. The festival programme of targeted celebratory events – including the New Voices Festival and Summer Festival – also plays a significant part in creating an
opportunity  for project participants to return to the Museum.
