Spelling blocks

Spelling blocks. Museum no. MISC.21-1967

This educational set was produced for an older child to help learn spelling and calculations.

Letters and numbers are printed on paper and mounted on wood, and stored in a mahogany box with 36 compartments and a lift-out tray. The letters slot into the lid of the box to form words and sentences.

The set was made in England around 1845 and belonged to a little girl who died in about 1850, aged about nine years old.
